Oral Health Tips for Children's Dental Health

First Tooth - First Birthday - First Dental Visit

It's never too early to start focusing on your child's oral health! The American Association of Pediatric Dentists recommends a dental visit by their first tooth or first birthday.

Protect Tiny Teeth

Baby teeth are important because of their key role of saving space for a child's permanent teeth. They are present for 8-10 years and affect their speaking, chewing and smiling. Untreated tooth decay can cause oral infections that enter the bloodstream and lead to other serious health problems.

Tips for Maintaining Your Child's Oral Health:

- Routine checkups

- Clean your baby's gums daily with a damp washcloth over the gums daily

- Start brushing with the first tooth

- Children 2-6 years old should brush twice a day for 2 minutes with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste

-Begin flossing

-Snack healthy! Avoid and/or limit fruit juice, sports drinks, fruit snacks and sticky candies. Instead, provide calcium-rich snacks like chees or low-sugar yogurt

- Keep hydrated with good old-fashioned water! Avoid sugary drinks!

-Replace your child's toothbrush every three to four months
