Bleeding Gums: An Early Sign of Gum Disease

Bleeding gums are often an early sign of periodontal disease, an infection of the tissues that support your teeth. In smokers, however, gums usually do not bleed because nicotine restricts the blood flow to the gums and this early sign of gum disease may go undetected.

Healthy gums are pink in colour and if they become red it may be a sign that gum disease is setting in.

Other symptoms of periodontal disease may include tender, red or swollen gums; gums that have pulled away from your teeth; frequent bad breath or loose teeth. Many times, however, these signs are not evident until gum disease has become more advanced.
